Creating a positive work environment - People before paperwork

As an administrator it is easy to get caught up in all the paperwork; but in order to create a great environment you have to be visible to your staff, children, and families.
  • If your program is small, visit each room daily. Talk to the staff, observe and participate in a snack or activity with the children. If you have a large program, take the time to visit one or two classes a day.
  • Visit the staff break room once or twice a week. It's a great opportunity to get to know about each of your staff.
  • A few days a week, set aside time at the end of the program day to be in a classroom for an extended period of time. This provides opportunity to observe the staff, build a block building with a group of children, and greet parents.
  • Join in special events. This is a great opportunity to build positive relationships that lead to sustaining positive environments.
